Idea 37 – Let’s get into a really good ebook.

One thing I have missed in lockdown is going to the library. Not so much for myself (as I have less time than ever to read with kids and working from home) but to take out children’s books. I love taking my children to the library and they love looking at books. We are lucky to have lots at home but you can never have too many. For those that love a good book rather than ordering one to be delivered on four wheels why not try South Gloucester library Service online. They are offering digital services completely free. This link is for anyone that fancies giving it a go…

Idea 35 – What changes will we keep long term?

During last Sunday’s virtual meeting we talked about adaptions that we have made to our lives due to the pandemic. We pondered the impact that such adaptions would have on the planet and may unintentionally prove beneficial to the environment. We certainly are all walking more, up cycling instead of visiting the sort it centers, taking less trips in the car and making our food go further to reduce trips to the supermarket. What have you changed that could have a positive impact to slow climate change? Over the last few weeks, like many people, I have held a number of work, socials and design meetings virtually. From staff meetings,…

Idea 27 – Greta comes to Bristol

On Thursday I looked at the weather, bus time tables, hire bike apps, police statements and Google maps to decide if I would go to the Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate. I have never been to something like this before and I am as far from a militant as you can get but this time it felt right and possible. Thanks to London for not being suitable and to the person who said let’s do Bristol instead. Bristol will get on board. You bet we did! Also thanks to my child’s nursery for unintentionally doing his settling in session today so I could spend 3 hours walking Bristol’s streets. Thinking…

    Idea 21 – Swop shops

So how many things did you received for Christmas in 2018 which are still languishing unused somewhere in your house? What about this year? Is it time for those items to leave your house and be loved and used by someone else. 🎁🏘💚 This week I know of three events aiming to reduce waste and make the most out of the items you do have.Firstly, TODAY at Little Stoke Community Cafe there is a present swap event. Did you get two of the same gift or did you receive a gift which wasn’t quite right and you know you won’t use. Instead of letting it sit in a cupboard for…

Idea 17 – It’s a wrap! Election and wrapping paper

Five days until elections.I’m starting this week with an interview between John Snow and Sir David Attenborough. It has made me reflect on how my thinking about this general election is different to previous ones because of climate change. I am also wondering how government will be forced to change to work harder on the climate agenda to slow climate change. Lots of links today but hopefully it will help in decision making for next Thursday. Have a look at this climate action toolkits as it explains what can be done in the lead up to the election. It even come up with our little group for this area. Some…

Idea 10 – The pen(cil) is mightier than the sword. ✏️

This is the 10th week of ideas and I thought I would do a quick recap and a small tip for this week. I am still working through the suggestions that were initially shared but if you have an idea please let me know so I can share it with this group in future weeks. I do wonder if these ideas help and if anyone else is joining me in trying them out. Is it making a difference? Personally I live in hope that it does make a difference but I do get a little deflated every time I relent and use the car or see how much time I…

Idea 4 – Just one less drive

I say ‘just one less drive’ but actually it usually works out as two as you generally you need to get back home at the end of the day! But hey it’s all for the planet and our benefit. Over the Summer I hired a bike following a link from the South Glos Council website. Links below. I hadn’t used a bike in years but wanted to try it out in the Summer months so I could see if a commute to work was doable. Was 4.4miles too much? I had no idea. I filled in a form on line in 5minutes. There was a small wait to collect the…

Idea 3 – Second Hand September

Help people and the planet! 🌍 I’m going to try this in September. I have a wardrobe full of clothes but most probably only wear about 30% of it. That 30% is usually reworn out of the clean washing pile and rarely makes it back to the wardrobe! This month I will dig a little deeper and get some more wear out of the other 70%. The link below explains a little bit more about the idea and also the scary fact that 11million items of clothing goes to landfill every year. Hold that thought, I am just checking my facts on the Oxfam website, and it is in fact…
