Idea 43 – Take us with you David, We need to see why we have to change and why we can’t wait.

This week I was confronted with three news stories on how the the planet’s climate is changing and the rapid decline of all the world’s delicate eco systems. In just one 15 minute news programme I was confronted with the WWF’s report on wildlife decline, the worst wildfires in California on record and zombie fires in the Arctic. The WWF’s report on the dramatic and rapid decline of wildlife in every single part of the world is scary. The decline is happening much quicker than previous predictions had anticipated. As I watch my child start school he is full of wonder, excitement and promise. Promise of a future world of…

    Idea 40 – 30 days Wild 🌸🦔🐝🤓🌱🐜🦗🎋🌿

Now this idea is going to keep us busy for a month! Have a go at The Wildlife Trust 30 days wild to increase your connection to nature and improve bio diversity. The link below was shared on the Bradley Stoke Families group earlier this week and is right up my street. Not only keeping my own children busy but also giving me more ideas on how to keep engaging the children I work with online and once back in/out of the classroom. Outdoor learning here we come! On the WildLife Trusts Facebook group someone shared a framed picture of the activity sheet they completed last year. In the same frame,…

    Idea 36 – Help a hedgehog week!

My hedgehog house is currently unoccupied. I’m hoping the previous resident found a nice winter home for his/her hibernation somewhere else and might pop back for a Summer stay at some point. Here are some things we can do to make our gardens more hedgehog friendly in this period of isolation. Hedgehogs emerge from hibernation in March and April so at this time of year they need to pile on the ‘slug’ pounds. Hedgehogs numbers have declined drastically so any thing we can do to make our garden and access to the garden easier will help. Here are the ideas from this British Hedgehog website. There are many simple things we…

Idea 35 – What changes will we keep long term?

During last Sunday’s virtual meeting we talked about adaptions that we have made to our lives due to the pandemic. We pondered the impact that such adaptions would have on the planet and may unintentionally prove beneficial to the environment. We certainly are all walking more, up cycling instead of visiting the sort it centers, taking less trips in the car and making our food go further to reduce trips to the supermarket. What have you changed that could have a positive impact to slow climate change? Over the last few weeks, like many people, I have held a number of work, socials and design meetings virtually. From staff meetings,…

Idea 34 – Looking our for our local area

Walks Over the last 4 weeks our local environment has become our playground. How lucky we are to live in an area that despite being well populated; still has lots of green areas. On Saturday evening we took great pleasure in spotting two male ducks enjoying a good feed on the small pond along the Common East. The evening bird song along that stretch was fantastic. I bet many Bradley Stoke folk have never explored their local area so much. We certainly are exploring lots of new roads, paths and cut through on our hour trips around the town. Fly Tipping Unfortunately fly tipping has increased significantly across the country…

Idea 33 – When you come back, remember that you are my guests….Not my masters. 🌍🌏🌎

Written by Author Haroon Rashid Insta: @authorharoonrashid I have wondered about whether I should keep suggesting these environmental ideas when the world is focused on protecting everyone from Covid – 19. But then I keep thinking about a poem that was shared by a friend on facebook. The fact that we have actually been forced to slow down and appreciate what we have, those closest to us and our immediate surroundings. Maybe this is the time to think about how precious life is and how delicate the balance of our existence is on Earth. Unfortunately the author is unknown and I can only find other people sharing it not the…

Idea 32 – Stay home and rediscover your garden 🌱🌷🌳

If you had told me when I was writing Idea 4 that I would have car journeys down to under 1 most weeks I would have been quite pleased that my new bike idea was working. I wondered this week how many of the ideas I have accidentally done during this period of isolation. Having less food waste and make do and mend have definitely been put into action. Take a look below and see how many you have tried. We have also been trying a bit of seed growing with the little ones and can now say we have carrots and radishes sprouting. Thanks to Marks and Spencer for providing…

    Idea 31 – Earth hour

Tonight between 8:30pm and 9:30pm we were going to be celebrating Earth Hour on Jubilee fields. Instead we will be staying in our houses and saving lives in doing so. Earth hour normally sees people across the world turning off their lights and either spending an hour in candle light or heading outside to enjoying the night. Spending an hour focusing on the wonder of nature and it’s amazing beauty. So tonight between 8:30-9:30 maybe hold your own garden Earth Hour. Turn off all the lights inside the house and head outside. Do a spot of star gazing. We saw the international space station going .over last night. Maybe do…

Idea 17 – It’s a wrap! Election and wrapping paper

Five days until elections.I’m starting this week with an interview between John Snow and Sir David Attenborough. It has made me reflect on how my thinking about this general election is different to previous ones because of climate change. I am also wondering how government will be forced to change to work harder on the climate agenda to slow climate change. Lots of links today but hopefully it will help in decision making for next Thursday. Have a look at this climate action toolkits as it explains what can be done in the lead up to the election. It even come up with our little group for this area. Some…
